Fun and learning in the Rose Room
Rose class blog 2016 |
Next week is Heritage Week! We will be celebrating our history and culture in Powerstown. On Monday there will be a mini museum for us examine different artefacts, guessing what their function once was. On Tuesday we will have a very special visitor come to class...an archaeologist who will do a mock dig with us in class.
Wednesday is Grandparents day, if there are any grandparents that would like to come in and play some board games with us or answer some questions about their childhood let me know! On Thursday, all children are invited to bring in any historical or cultural artefacts that they might have for show and tell/guessing games. In assembly on Friday we will find out if our guesses for the Guess the Baby teacher photos were right or not! During the afternoons, for the month of November we were exploring the stories of Fionn MacCumhaill. During our structured play we made the Giant's cuaseway out of counters and clay. One of us even made the volcano that formed the Causeway. We also grew some beanstalks to see how plants grow, learning that they need soil, water, air and light!
Tomorrow is Wear Red day! By wearing red we're showing racism the red card. We are expecting thousands of people to Wear Red for the day to make a stand against racism. We already have 35 schools participating and a number of workplaces, colleges and activities happening elsewhere. The purpose is both to raise awareness but also to raise funds for Show Racism the Red Card.
The aftermath of Brexit referendum saw a rise in racism in the UK and similarly the election of Donald Trump has seen a rise in racism in the USA. Across Europe, those who promote racism are on the march. Racism is an issue in Ireland too. We can all make a stand. To tackle racism, education is vital and that is the work of Show Racism the Red Card. Through harnessing the profile of sports stars and young people we have an impact in both Education & Sport. Help us tackle racism and empower young people to make a stand for a progressive future. Our first movie night of the year takes place on Tuesday 22nd November! The Student Council voted for the movie and Zootropolis was chosen. The screening will take place in the school hall on the big projector just like at the cinema! Everyone is welcome to bring a cushion so they can get comfy on the floor! Children are welcome to bring snacks and there will be a tuck shop selling treats on the night too. Children are welcome to bring along siblings and friends. Tickets: €5 (single) €10 (family) will be on sale outside the school every morning and afternoon. Tickets are also on sale online: https://www.aladdin.ie/p/11451761 !
Thanks to all for bringing in their dry recyclables for recycling week. We had great fun making our Rosebot.
Hi all, just writing to you here to make sure that you've had a chance to check your class dojo messages detailing what will be covered over the next month as part of RSE month.
If you missed it, please have a look as soon as you can. If for any reason you should have any concerns please feel free to contact me via dojo, or at the end of the school day. We had great fun in the Rose class on dress up day. We played our favourite maths games, sang and danced and went to the hall for the bake sale where we helped raise 415 euro for the school!
Thanks to all those who participated, dressed up, baked or just had fun. This week we started our autumn themed play stations. Each afternoon each table group takes part in a different activity. Today some of the kids made amazing fox dens using cardboard, drew diagrams of fox dens, sorted conkers by size, did leaf rubbings and played with autumn animal puppets. We had loads of fun! This month in the Rose Class we will be examining all of the changes we see in our local environment caused by autumn. Already, some of the children have started to bring in signs of autumn they have found whilst out and about. We've got conkers, blackberries, conker husks, seeds and fallen leaves!
On Tuesday we went on a nature trail to our forest school. We brought with us checklists and ticked off the signs of autumn we saw. We found mushrooms, blackberries and lots of seeds. When we got back to the classroom we gathered all of the things we found and did labelled diagrams. As the month goes on we'll continue to look at how our environment changes with autumn so if anyone finds any red or brown leaves or any other sign of autumn, bring it in for our nature wall! |
